Im wondering how much I should overclock my computer. I have a AMD 64bit 3500+ running at 2.2ghz. The average temperature of the CPU is 24C and about 27C while proccesing. Ive alredy overclocked to 2.4ghz and im wonering how much more, if any is safe to do.

I found that VIA chipsets have audio difficulties on OCing, onboard audio.

You should consider if you really need to, you do if your CPU usage hits 100% when you're playing something like renegade. I never dare go beyond 10% of it's correct freuquency, for you, that's 2.2 --> 2.42 Ghz, not much, You could probably get away with... 2.7 maybe 2.8. I should warn you that OC'd chips don't behave. Also, AMD chips are (or were) happy to melt themselves.

My CPU is frequently at 100% while playing renegade.

You have an "ok" processor. I would recommend getting a bigger cooling unit, (if it is stock..) and then overclock to 2.8<.

It's normal for your CPU to constantly be on the highest load when playing any sort of game that uses a graphics API. When Windows needs to use some of it for another program, the kernel automatically adjusts it.

Take into consideration that when you over clock the cpu you're also overclocking the RAM. Now if you have cheapo RAM I really wouldn't push your luck by going any higher.

I have a AMD Sempron 3300+ and its stock rate is 1.80GHz. I'm currently running mine at 2.2Ghz. I've seen a site where someone with my chip has gone to 2.5Ghz with standard cooling. But the difference there is that I have cheap ram rated at DDR333 (165mhz@stock) which are now hitting 196mhz so nearly DDR400. My computer is stable for normal working condition; Ie playing Renegade but when I start doing some video decoding/encoding I can get the BSOD. So be careful with what you overclock.

The only thing I overclock is my video card, by unlocking the 4 hidden pipelines and the shaders. All Geforce 6800s come with 12 pipelines, but if you are lucky enough you can unlock 4 more pipelines (making a total of 16) without receiving artifacts. I'm one of the lucky ones... it helps quite noticeably.

Also, to elaborate on what I said about CPU usage, here is a screenshot below to prove my statement. The only reason you see your CPU usage at 10% while playing Renegade is because it instantly goes down as soon as you minimize the game. If you boot it up in windowed mode, you can bring up the task manager and see your actual CPU usage. Make sure you're in a game though or else it just idles.

You find its max and overclock to that, as long as the temperature does not exceed 50C. My 3500+ did 2.7 and stayed below 45C with a XP-90 heatsink, but it wouldn't stay stable over 2.7 without a lot of voltage.

They're absolutely not. Also, I don't know why you'd even want to use VIA in the first place, let alone overclock with one.

I've got my 1.8ghz AMD Opteron 144 at 2.8ghz right now, runs perfectly at 38-40c idle, about 45c load, with stock cooling and 1.4v. I could probably put it at 3.0ghz, haven't tried yet.

I could find a better heatsink at a dump. Keep looking, get something either really big or made of Cu.

To be honest overclocking isn't worth it, you might aswel just save your money and just by it from a store, even if you do overclock you have to do it by 30% or else you won't see any difference in game play and besides 40-50FPS in a 42player server is good enough anyway

I would have to agree. I would personally recommend buying the one I am currently using.

How do you overclock? The processor in this computer is 1.3GHz and I run renegade on all highest settings and max resolution and I get 20-30FPS.

Overclocking is done within your BIOS. But if you don't know how to overclock I would highly recommend not even thinking about doing it. Well unless you want to purchase another computer.

If he doesn't know how and wants, I'd recommend learning as apposed to not doing it. There is an unlimited amount of information on overclocking on the internet, highly detailed guides inculuded. Read into it a lot and make sure you have a good idea of what you're doing before you try. If you have a laptop hook that up and have the guide open when you first try, if not, write down any important information beforehand(or even print the guide, but it could be quite lengthy).

You should overclock it 0mhz. Why would you overclock for no reason? Oh I have a working computer. But wait, it's running fine? I better try to overclock it and push it out of that safety zone so it runs... better? Uh... Wha?

The only reason I overclocked my system is because i'm using an builtin Geforce 6100. Overclocking the CPU also overclocked my Ram and my Graphics thus getting me higher frame rates within Ren. 15FPS sucks 40FPS is alot better for the same price.

Let's say I wanted an FX60. But I could only afford a X2 3800+. There you go, reason enough to overclock. And yes I run a 3800 at 2.6Ghz.

Like I said, "good enough" is nothing but an opinion. I wanted better performance, I always do. My current or former performance might have been good enough for you, but not for me.

If you'd stop being such a pansy(Doitle) and learn to do it right, there would be absolutely no concern for safety.I wonder what you would have blamed your current computer problems on if you'd been overclocking... thank god you didn't in that case.

To be honest Renx is near enough right.
People can't afford these top end graphics cards and Intel Dual core PentiumD and these Dual core2, some of these can sit you back £200-300, which i certainly wouldn't pay, if your looking for a new CPU i'd advice a PentiumD 2.8Ghz Dual core, but again this wouldn't even compare to a dual 2 core at 1.88ghz, The pentium D is a huge over clocker, this can be overclocked to around 4.2Ghz @ stable Blush , now thats a nice CPU, but then again overclocking isn't as good as some people think, yes better performance and so on, more FPS on renegade, but depending on how much your overclocking you system depends on how long it's going to live for Rocked Over

I got my Pentium D 3.0Ghz for £100 at scan.co.uk

There's an E6600 there too for no more than £250.

A 2Ghz Core2 would beat a 4Ghz P4 hands down. The best bang for your buck CPU is probably the E6600 right now, and I'm pretty sure Intel is dropping prices on CPUs up to 40% soon too.
