For very good reasons to me I am attempting to get Renegdae running on a Suse 10.1 AMD64 Linux box using either wine or crossover - I have managed to get the Renegade install to work and can see the installed Westwood files. I cannot however get the game to work as I need a no cd crack that works with Renegade 1.01 out of the box initially in order to get the 1.037 patch to install. Obviously I would also like to install Renguard as well.

I am in a catch 22 - the Renegade install will not work without a no cd crack for ver 1.01 (which I cannot find on google), I cannot download and install renguard automatically as the sub directory structure in Linux defeats the installer - and besides I am not sure Renguard would work with the early version of Renegade.

Help - he said sobbingly - I seem to remember you could get Renguard as a stand alone install?

Thanks for reading this far.

Regards,

rafkid

Are all the updates to ren (patches v1.0XX to 1.037) stritcly data? It's probable you could simply manually patch the game, someone tell me if I'm an idiot.

Also, someone post the link to all those ren files someone has uploaded (<3)

manual patch is on ftp.westwood.com

Where exactly? Can't seem to find it.

Someone knows which files he'd have to overwrite?

ty all for ur help - I appreciate it. I suspect I need a little help from the Crossover/Wine community to get this working being too new to Linux to be competent.

ho hum - I will get it working one day soon and when I do.............it will be bye bye Bill Gates and hello Linus Torvalds on a permanent basis

the ftp access on Westwood was a good shout - fascinating I never once thought to look there - now is there somewhere like it for Renguard downloads?

Others may know more.

As far as I know, renguard does not work on Linux/WINE (it does not even work on some win2k, win 64 bit systems).

Considering you said you were running on an AMD64 PC, you might be running a 64bit distro, in which case I would think RG won't work. However, there's a chance it might be compatible with 32bit distros when used in the correct parameters. Wink
Myself, I just managed to get Renegade to install on Ubuntu, without the WOL components, and no RG. Sad

The reason RenGuard doesn't run on Windows XP 64-bit is NOT because the OS is 64-bit (the OS is backwards compatible with 32-bit, else Renegade wouldn't even run on it), but because of SVKP not being supported on it. Same goes for Windows 2000.

That's not relevant icedog. SVKP is built into Renguard. So it's one thing, and when SVKP does not run on x64, 2k, renguard doesn't too.

It is relevant. And you're repeating what I pointed out.

I said that because Jonty's logic seemed to be more towards a false understanding that RenGuard doesn't run on 64-bit systems because they are 64-bit and RenGuard is 32-bit.

I do not belive RenGuard 1.03x will work, because it relies on the SVKP service. However, RenGuard 1.04 will not use SVKP and theoretically will work fine.

Thanks for all the comments everyone - they all helped in their own way. so I finally got Renegade to work using a WINE type program called CEDRIC or CEDAR ow wotever - it loaded - yeehaa I thought. Only to find out that it ran like a dog in single player mode. Undaunted I eventually got 1.037 to load as well - hurrah - this is on SUSE 10.1 64 - bloody hurrah I here you cry. It still ran like a dog - there is a head up display in the window it runs in giving fps as bouncing between 30 and 75 with dreadful lag spikes which made sniping interesting. So I thought no sweat I will just download and install the rend3d9 thingy to make it work with the bits and bobs for DX9.0C etc - no chance - could not find it on the net anyway. All in all a very interesting and heart rending experience. In short you can get the game to run on Linux with a bit of fiddling about - just not very well. The same machine running win xp pro runs an fps of 120 thru to 400 at 1280X1024 with all the nice bits turned on.

So now to make you all laugh - upset with monsieur Gates and the horrible way XP grinds to a halt every few months I thought I know - I will install Win2K - I always did like the clean lines a fresh install and after seven years of development it is quite stable - all this just to play Renegade mind you.

Have you got there yet??? Arte you chuckling out loud yet? You know what is coming don't you? Remember I brought this poxy win2k vanilla install upto SP4 before I deigned to muddy it up with an actual Renegade install - go on then tell us what happened next then..................

Buffer Over run - sob - just as I went to install Renguard - this prompted me to revist this thread where those in the know have littered the information about Renguard and win2k not working all over the place - only I have not read it till now...........................

How I detest the bloatware that is winxp

Blagh - happy new year everyone he said as he reached for the winxp pro install CD
