I'm with GoDaddy and have been for ages, but I've started getting slow download speeds from them (~20kb/s) probably because of a slow route since they say it's fine (the problem isn't my end, MS servers give me ~8mb/s).

So I'm looking for a new webhost - which ones do you recommend? I need it to be Linux, cheap and with SQL hosting too, preferably at no extra cost.

Thanks.

I'm a webhost, so I won't say anything other than www.webhostingtalk.com tends to be good for reviews. Unless you get on their bad side, then they make up shit about you and ban you. Webhosting is pretty cheap these days.

I like godaddy, in general, though ... have you spoken to them about this? You may get a credit to your account, etc.

Run a matt's traceroute to check where the problem is. Google "winmtr", fill out your webadress and run it for 15 mins, then check where the data loss happens.

Thanks - I haven't used that app before, are you able to shed any light on the results for me? (attached)

The %'s are packet loss. Can you do the same for google.com ?

What I read here is that you have over half packet loss at almost every hub it passes, starting on your own ISP :-S. Normally it should be max 1-5 % at one or two of the hub's :-S.

I suspect the problem is your side.

I just did a trial to google and got 2% loss on the final hop. Your ISP has an issue at this server: ge-1-1.fw-wk.readingconnect.net. Let them know, send them that text file and ask for it to be fixed.

Don't accept BS replies either, i've had a few of those from my old ISP.

Whilst I remember, for the MS site it's possible your ISP cached the file you were using.

It would make sense to store a copy of say Vista RC 2 on your local server, rather than pay for 2.5GB of bandwidth per user.

ge-1-1.fw-wk.readingconnect.net is a janet firewall....talking to the techies won't do anything there. No idea what was causing it but I'll just use a different webhost. Thanks.
