Heya,

i have a really really old CPU + motherboard and im starting to lack HD space at the moment, ive looked into my Motherboard and it only supports up to an 80GB Hard Drive, which i can get for £40 Smile

however for £30 more, i can get a 260GB! Surprised

and i really dont want to let this offer pass.... if i was to partition the drive into 80GB chunks would this work with my motherboard?

also, im probably going to get a new motherboard + CPU soon, however i will need to make sure my memory + graphics is compatable... how exactly would i check all this?

well the memory for one...

my dad said that they wont fit into a recent motherboard? should i take out my memory is there anyway i could check what connection type they are? i can take them out and post a screenshot of them if needed Whats That

ive got a pretty decent graphics card however, and im quite sure that one will work fine Smile

its AGP

its not possible to update my motherboard and CPU without reformatting is it?

if the memory has 1 notch it will probably fit. else if it has 2 notches it will probably not, 1 notch = DDR
2 notches = SDRAM

you can put your hdd in the computer without reformatting but is is strongly recommended.

About the GFX card, it depends on the motherboard, if you get a very new motherboard they do away with AGP slots in favour of PCIe, but most mid range ones still use AGP.

As for memory, how old is really really old? You can get some programs which will tell you what speed and type your memory is, one I tend to use is PC Wizard from CPUID (http://www.cpuid.com/pcwizard.php), it's fairly in depth and gives you a lot of information about all the components in your system.

Do you know the specs of the current motherboard CPU and other hardware?

And if you want an update that will last a couple of years then I suggest getting a AMD X2 with AM2 socket or a Intel Core 2 Duo with motherboard and ddr2 ram (which you most certainly wont have) and a PCI-e graphics card ( as you want a motherboard with PCI-e as that will be used longer, APG is EOL)

and btw, the graphics card is:

Manufacturer : Nvidia Corp
Model : GeForce 6600 GT

And you will need new memory if you want to make sure your update will last a couple of years, ddr ram is end of life.
If you really want to keep your grafix card you would need a motherboard with AGP, but if you want to be a bit more future proof I would recommed new Motherboard and new GFX card

I would look into at least getting PC3200 RAM, PC2700 isn't that great, and if you get a motherboard that supports overclocking, you can get PC3200 (DDR400) to run at 400MHz with good timings.

To make sure your RAM is compatible, you need to take into consideration the following:

1. Does your RAM have the same amount of pins as the RAM sockets on the motherboard?

2. Do the RAM PC number match the compatible PC number for the motherboard?
