Probably the only thing I am looking forward to with Vista is to be able to enjoy HD movies, so I'll upgrade to Vista when I get a video card and monitor that are HDCP complient.
HDCP, for those of you that don't know, is probably going to be a content protection system for HD movies. It will protect video as is travels from the transmitter to the reciever by encryption. It's going to make people who want to enjoy HD movies on their computers buy HDCP complient parts (new video card, monitor, etc.) and use Vista. (Please correct me if I am wrong at all here.)

danpaul88 wrote on Mon, 26 June 2006 17:46 | Yeah, I expect M$ are doing all they can to stop piracy.. why I don't know since it would just push more people with tight budgets to other operating systems, but they like to be seen to be doing something about it.
I don't know anything about the technical details of how vista blocks ports, but I expect someone will crack the core OS if needed if that's what it takes to unlock them again. It might slow down p2p in the long run, but someone somewhere will get past it.
And there's nothing to stop people dual booting with linux to get their p2p fix...

Like I said, it is also a physical, hardware issue. I "Mod" chip will be needed. Although the dual boot issue isnt one I thought about. Now im thinking, if you used linux on a vista-built-factory PC, with the port limitaion, would it have the same effect as with Vista? Good question, anyone know the answer?

If Vista blocks too many P2P services, I don't think that people will change to it quite frankly.
I'd rather use Win 98 than using Vista if it limits me too much. And Linux also come with a lot of nice GUI now.
Think of the impact on broadband-companies. Who's going to give out money for high speed broadband if it ain't to download a lot. People using up over 20 giga per month, don't do that by simply surfing/gaming/downloading legal stuff...
The future in piracy combat will probably be hardware protections but there will always be people finding a way around it. And it will probably give a nice black market for computers without the hardware chip.
