If the above doesn't work... well... I tried.

Get a friend's XP cd and install that one with your old serial. Or get a Windows 98, it does the trick.

I sure hope you do have friends...

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html <- hijackthis: a good program to say what processes that are running are good or bad. copy or paste the log file into http://www.hijackthis.de and click "analize". it will tell you whats good and whats bad.

If you have a USB Flash Drive you can download applications on a seperate computer, install them on the flash drive and run them from the flash drive. If you don't have one maybe one of your friends do.

It keeps saying it cannt access the file it is being used by another process.

I bet all this can be sorted by doing this:
http://img71.imageshack.us/img71/6687/endprocess8un.gif

then deleting the file like you'd normally do.

1. Open the nearest window
2. Pick up your Norton install CD(s)
3. Lever back arm
4. Defenestrate
5. Go get a different product

Norton won't fix any problem you have. Its software is so invasive that it might as well be a virus. Did you know that newer versions of Norton will not allow you to uninstall the software without first logging onto their website (I kid you not- you cannot get rid of Norton through Add/Remove Programs or the Recycle Bin)? Did you know that Norton will pick up certain competing products as "possible threats?" Did you know that you cannot disable some Norton functions, such as the notification popups, even if you need those functions disabled to use another program? Did you know that disabling updates, firewall, or active virus protection will set the program to bombard you with a continuous stream of said popup notifications until you re-enable those "features?"

Return it now, before it owns your system. I'd rather do a cold-turkey reformat and lose all my files than put their crap on my system.

I remember when I deleted it off my computer. It took me several hours to pick it clean from the registry so I could get a newer and better anti-virus program on there.

I went through that experience with a friend's computer just before school got out. It was a pain all the way back when I used Norton in the days of Win95/98... getting that program scoured off his XP Pro machine made getting rid of AOL software seem like a simple click & drag operation, and that stuff is notorious for its tenacity.

Even McAfee would be preferable to Norton... at least that dies when you terminate all its processes, and it doesn't feel the need to inform you every five seconds, with pop-ups, that you disabled it.

I've had pretty good results using Grisoft AVG on my lappy... I've resolved to never again use pay software. The loss is not worth the gain.

Agreed, anti-virus isn't something you should pay for - AVG works well, personally I prefer Avast.

Burn those CD's and download a free AV program.

Free ones scare you? The free ones are usually the best on the market. Even though that goes against your natural instinct of you get what you pay for, free antivirus companies do not have thousands of dollars to spend on advertising they have to base themselves on reputations. Symantec (Norton) is one of the most corupt "respected" companies around. They themselves have created a virus that is their program. It impedes the users progress and is all around bothersome, the same as a virus.
