The videos are stored on the disk and don't get copied to your hard drive normally unless you do it yourself.

You must have cracked the disk or done something really horrible to it for the cd to shatter... Dont Get It

I still have my original disks from February 2002. I have reinstalled multiple times since then, and even with a couple of shallow scratches, I never have any problems with them. I constantly use my Data disk since I never installed a no-CD patch. What it really comes down to is how you store your disks, and how well you care for them.

As for the videos, if you can find someone who's willing to send you 353 MB of .bik files (which you can open with the RAD Video Tools), more power to you.

I also still have my original disks from 2002, the data disk is a bit scratched now since its constantly in use (also never got round to a no-cd crack), but it still works.

You can't simply say 'ea used bad disks', maybe there was a bad batch but if you keep your disks in their cases and dont use them as coasters they generally last a long time.

Euhh, have you ever tried not using any disc. if you don't use any disc it askes if you want to put a disc in. If you press "Cancel", your game will just load. Atleast that what happens for me.

I have to install renegade every time I want to play it (college computer system resets hard drive changes on shutdown) and thats most days. The disks still work and have nothing apart from a few thousand minor surface scratches on them.

I've actually tried to get a CD to blow apart from centrifugal force but its still not happened. Think the fastest I've spun one at was ~5000rpm on a DC motor I rescued from a scrap printer (makes a sound like the beehive of god)...
