OK, my system is way above requirements: P4 3.2ghz, 1GB RAM, Geforce 6800 512mb memory, 240GBHDD - I am running a 2mbps Internet connection through TalkTalk (In the UK).

Recently I have been experiencing intermittent FPS drops ingame, I have recently upgraded my GFX Card and installed The First Decade - however everything was running fine after both of these events (at 75fps on max settings)

My pings are not great as I share the connection with another PC but that doesn't seem to be related.

I have reinstalled ren, both using my original cd and the first decade, tried with/without renguard.

The other computer on my connection has had similar problems but not to the same extent.

When this occurs my FPS drops to anything as low as 3 and the game becomes completely unplayble for a short while, then will come back to normal, this happens every few minutes.

Any ideas would be appreciated, please bear in mind that I am a bit of a n00b when it comes to changing settings etc so feel free to speak to me in lamens terms.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

it *could* be your internet connection is being intermittent, never used talktalk so I don't know what their connections are like... can't think of anything else off the top of my head except to make sure you havn't got anything in the background accessing the net (could even be a virus / malware uploading / downloading stuff from / to your computer )

I had a problem similar to this, and it turned out to be caused by having my web browser minimized, on a page that had periodic automatic refreshes. Every time the page would refresh, my Renegade would slow to a crawl for a good 5-8 seconds.

Not saying this is your problem, but just to give you the idea to check around for other processes that you might have running while you are playing.

Hmmm I usually have Avast running in the bacckground but have tried closing allbackground applications without noticing a difference. Also I will normally have a forum window minimised but they do not have auto refresh on - also I have always used Anti virus and forums so cant see why they would suddenly affect it Sad

Will run full Virus/Malware scans, do all the usual upkeep stuf - see if that helps any.

what connection is your graphics card? PCI/AGP/PCI-e

i have a 256mb PCI one and it tends not to like lots of ppl doing lots of things at the same time. then again, im used to having moderatally low frame rates.

plus, try to keep your monitors refresh rate to 60hz as that's whats its desinged for.

it is an AGP x8 - this one to be precise: http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/107115

Lots of people doing lots of things? like Messenger programs IRC/MSN/Xfire etc, I will shut them all down and see if I get any improvement.

My monitor is and always has been running at 60hz, my game, connection, fps were all acting superbly with pings averaging 100 and fps of 50-75 pretty muchat all times until recently.

I've have this problem alot when I'm playing in my own servers. My FPS will start at normal than slowly go down until it hits around 5.

Leaving and coming fixed it..Temporarily Sad.

BIOS Settings!!! Sound card Settings!!!
If your Motherboard has on-board video and/or sound, make sure these are disabled in the BIOS. Also, make sure the AGP 8x setting is selected. If you are actually using the on-board sound, install a sound card.

P.S. I use Avast without any issues. Also, some motherboards will only allow 4x on the AGP Bus.
hehe, I use AntiVir Gaurd. Avast is on the old pc.

Do you have a flat screen or CTR? Most flat screens (not the expensive ones) have a problem with much action at the same time, I've read a whole thing about it but it was quite technical Razz. But then it wouldn't be randomly going down but rather when you're in big action scenes.

2 meg connection...?

i was with telewest till it became too slow. it maybe the contract you made with talktalk, speeds arent for gaming etc. try it with many people in the server and try it with few people in the server.

plus the time in which it takes data to go from the disk drive and HDD(s) through the CPU and the GPU may take it time at cirtain times...

BIOS Settings have not been fiddled with since buying the PC so dont believe the problem will be there - but will check for 8x AGP settings.

Will ensure my sound card drivers are up to date

My motherboard does not use "on board" graphics or sound

I am going to turn Avast back on, turning it off made no difference and dont really want to pick up a virus and create more problems Sad

I had a trained computer technician take a look at my motherboard to check port compatibility and had him check the card I was purchasing for compatibility so pretty sure that isn't an issue also.

I have a 17" Flat panel monitor - have been running ren through it for over a year and never had problems like this until now.

Yes the connection is 2 meg, recently upgraded from 512k but was working fine after the upgrade - I have tried in several different servers small and large games, problem still occured in a 2v2 when I was in my base with no1 around, not even any vehicles on the map.

I will defrag my HDD (although it has been formatted relitavely recently and only has 18 out of 240 Gigs full) to see if that helps the HDD speed at all, my main concern is that it may be a CPU problem as I cant really afford a replacement at the moment.

Many thanks to everyone who has posted suggestions, will keep trying anything new so keep em coming please-will be sure to let you know if I get it sorted.

check to see if anything is updating itself in the background, perhaps avast is downloading (or even just checking for) updates, which it will probably have still done even with it's firewall disabled (never used the program so can't say for sure).

I wouldn't think the problem is CPU related, CPU's are generally fairly reliable, and when they start going wrong they tend to screw up more than just FPS...

If you have recently formatted your hard drive is it a fair assumption to think you also reinstalled windows? Did the problem start occuring right after the reformat, or some time after that?

If you downloaded the latest drivers from the nvidea website try installing the drivers that came with the gfx card instead, some newer drivers have an odd habit of messing with renegade...

Have tried it with all programs turned off, will reconfigure the network to have the internet connection coming directly to my machine to ensure I am getting best connection.

Some time after, around 3 weeks I think and it was OS that is all on one setup disk for my PC that is already configured correctly for my machine.

I am currently using the drivers provided my my graphics card.

Clean the GPU fan, CPU fan, and case fans. Roll back the sound card drivers or any other drivers that maybe affecting the game play. Set the GFX card settings to its default performance setting and the resolution to 800 by 600. I doubt it is the Internet connection speed, but I do agree that a program updating in the back ground will definitely cause this.

When did it start happening did you update any programs/ downloaded something via p2p or downloaded a strange file?

Try posting a hijack-this log on a proffesional forum.. or just post it here and then ile have a look at if there's any strange processes running. Also Avast is pretty decent, but try a different scanner like Nod32 or Kaspersky.. it could be going past it.

Also you could also see a format as a option.. but that's the easy way if everything fails you could try a format. If it's still doing it after that, then you know that its a hardware issue.

I defragged my HDD, it was completely fragmented (no idea why as its recently been formatted)

I plugged my internet connection directly to my PC

I removed Renegade/Renguard completely and re-installed using my original renegade disc.

Somewhere along the line something fixed it, I can only assume it was removing/reinstalling ren but I had done that previously with no affect - so idk.

Tried most of the suggestions on this thread previously, so something else may have helped and just needed the reinstall to correct the problem, sorry to be so vaugue - would suggest directing anyone with similar problems to this thread as a lot of people have contributed some good ideas.

Thanks again
