It isn't the expense of the music...I'd be fine with paying $20 per CD as long as I could then rip those tracks to .mp3 and make as many copies as I wanted for my home, car, CD player, best friend, etc (without any restrictions). However, with all the copy protection bullshit, you can never be sure that the next CD you buy won't install something on your system that you really don't want there- the whole bit with Sony's rootkits is a prime example. Why should I pay top dollar for music when doing so punishes me like some kind of criminal (by force-installing software that monitors my use of the CD that I bought with my money), when I can actually go and be that criminal with no consequences whatsoever?
It's not a hard choice to make. Now, I won't touch P2P apps with a 10 foot pole because they can be as problematic as the DRM software on CDs, but I sure as hell will go scouting around the internet to find obscure little free download sites. In this case, it's safer for me and my computer to be on the "wrong" side of the law.
