Hello from my Legal Resources class. Doing research for a project, I came across a judgment issued almost a year ago yesterday.
Just a brief caption of it:
Plaintiffs brought action against 29 internet users who allegedly downloaded more than 1,000 songs over which producers had rights under Copyright Act onto their home computers[...] Motions judge determined that downloading songs for personal use did not amount to infringement[...]Motions judge held that mere fact of placing copy on shared directory in computer where that copy can be accesseed did not amount to distribution.
A small "win" for those who like to download music, but not the final say.

I agree. I would buy the CDs I like, but they put that crap on them. It's too much of a risk for me.

Last time I read that it's actually good if people dowload music, the singer gets more famous. But since like everyone downloads now I doubt its any good.
But anyways, I download music to see if its good. If I really like the game or music then I will buy it. And some software is verry expensive but if your still a student you can get a Windows XPsp2 or Office or any other program verry cheap.. so to then download it 'with hey I am a student I can't afford it' is just dumb because the risk of downloading such program is higher.
As for the prices when they ask 3,50 euro for one fucking song a.k.a a single thats just ridicilous.

It isn't the expense of the music...I'd be fine with paying $20 per CD as long as I could then rip those tracks to .mp3 and make as many copies as I wanted for my home, car, CD player, best friend, etc (without any restrictions). However, with all the copy protection bullshit, you can never be sure that the next CD you buy won't install something on your system that you really don't want there- the whole bit with Sony's rootkits is a prime example. Why should I pay top dollar for music when doing so punishes me like some kind of criminal (by force-installing software that monitors my use of the CD that I bought with my money), when I can actually go and be that criminal with no consequences whatsoever?
It's not a hard choice to make. Now, I won't touch P2P apps with a 10 foot pole because they can be as problematic as the DRM software on CDs, but I sure as hell will go scouting around the internet to find obscure little free download sites. In this case, it's safer for me and my computer to be on the "wrong" side of the law.

May I note that P2P-programs nowadays are a LOT safer than download sites. The current p2p-programs do what they need to do while the download sites often install 1001 different kinds of spyware.

Only if you use big download sites. I tend to look for private archives.

Haha, nice find. I find that using p2p programs is fine except for the fact that they're really slow.
