The memory on a video card barely matters as much as the GPU itself. The Geforce 6800GT is FAAAAAAR greater than the Geforce FX5500. The FX5500 is what people call a budget card. It's cheap and runs half-decent, but not that good at all. I have a Geforce 6800 128MB (not GT) and it's a million times better than my last card (a Geforce FX5600 256MB).

Only tried them once and they kept telling me the item was out of stock up until i cancelled my order, but most of my friends swear by them being good and efficient.

The 6800GT will always have 16 pipelines. The 6800 also has 16 pipelines, but four of them are locked (making it 12). You use RivaTuner to unlock them and hope you won't get any artifacts. I unlocked them with mine and I haven't seen any artifacts. It's a great performance boost.
