These only started today, but I suspect it has something to do with a driver issue or perhaps a lack of power to the card. I'll be playing Renegade (Haven't tried it with other games since my wireless router only works well with it online) and suddenly the game just locks up out of nowhere, always right after someone's typed something. It's happened twice so far, and causes the entire system to freeze. I have to shut down the computer via the power button - I checked its temperature both times and it runs at 37 degrees Celsius, which seems to be pretty normal.

I'll try seeing if there's a newer version of the Forceware drivers I can install, and then change the power connection since it's using a line that's connected to a pair of hard drives.

Graphics cards will cool down very fast, checking it AFTER a reboot isn't all that accurate..
What's the 12v rating on your PSU? What brand is it?

I'd do a fresh install of your graphics card drivers. It's either your drivers, or a lack of power.

EDIT: Your PSU is fine, it's probably definately the drivers. Do this:

1. Uninstall your drivers
2. Go into safemode, use DriverCleaner Pro to completely uninstall them.
3. Boot up into regular mode, reinstall graphics card drivers.
4. End.

My PC would do it all of the time, I localized it to my Power supply unit. I still have replaced it, but rather downgraded my PC to prevent futher lock-ups.

I could instantly tell my PC was not getting the required power by how slow my fans were spinning. When I downgraded, they went back up to speed.

He has a PCP&C, that part is fine.

Open the temperature screen and leave it running in the background, then open a game and play for five minutes or so, then alt-tab out and check the what the temp is immediately after the game minimizes.

If it's not a problem with the drivers then you could always RMA your card. From what I hear leadtek isn't supposed to be that great of a brand anyway

I have a Leadtek 6800, no problems here. I was even able to unlock the pipelines to 16 just fine. Seems like a good brand to me.

Actually, I forgot to mention that I've played Renegade earlier with 4x AF, like usual with the new setup, and I've checked the temperatures just to make sure while I was in-game... Never wavered from 40C or so.

I just uninstalled the drivers via that driver uninstallation program in safe mode, and the card has its own power cord running to it without being plugged into anything else. I doubt it's my PSU considering I bought a PC Power & Cooling 410w a few weeks ago.

All geforce cards have horrid performance with AA on. Unless you plan on getting a 7800GTX turning it off will help alot. One thing you might want to check is the CPU temp, it can cause random lockups also when it overheats, if it's an Intel P4 it could be a possibility. And there's nothing wrong with leadtek cards, they are as good as any out there.

Yeah it's not a GPU temperature issue, the 6000-series can take quite a bit of heat before failing...my 6800GT runs at 50-60C, but it worked fine about half a year ago in 95C when one of the fans broke and it took me a while to replace it. (It actually peaked at over 100C couple of times)

If your PSU manages to do 18 Amps or more on the -12V rail, it's not the problem either.

If new drivers won't help , I'd bet it's just sloppy Renegade code. It crashes every once in a while for me too, for both laptop and desktop (6800GT & 6800). I've seen weird things like corrupted message area (the place on top where kills and messages show up) and misplaced textures before on both systems...

PS: Dal, I disagree, mine works fine with 4x or 8x in most games. Razz

I said AF, not AA... I hate blurry text, so I keep AA off. The effect it gives to me is minimal for the FPS loss it creates. I prefer texture filtering since it makes everything nice and crisp.

Just played about four games in a row, peaked at 45 Celsius without an issue after Nineball's help. I appreciate it!

It's no problem, really.
Do what I said whenever you replace your current graphics card with a new one, too. Otherwise, you could end up having this happen again

When I turn on AA I never lose more than like 5 FPS in any game.

I get over 75 fps in renegade with 8xAA and 16xAF, must just be your settings Razz

Also it could be caused by both the game and the drivers running AA/AF at the same time. If you're running AA/AF from ingame, your profile for that game should have them set to Application controlled. If you prefer to run AA/AF from the drivers, it should be turned off in the game.

How do you check the temperature of a certain peice of hardware is running? If it is software, can someone reccomend a program for me?

EDIT: I found a program called Hmonitor...but it only detects the temperature of my hard drive which is running at 37°C.

You are one of the lucky ones ACK. I've had 2 6600GT's, both faulty. I'm now using an ATI x850XT.

The random lock ups are a known issue with the 6600 series. There is a 63 page long thread on the official nvidia forums about the 6600 locking up, and no set solution:

http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=1029

So yea, I'm an ATI man now. Smile

I don't know if I'm lucky or not, I just pay attention to reader reviews and the egg rating and how many ratings something was given when I look for new hardware on Newegg.com

Apparently it still locks up now. I left the system on and went out to dinner with Sarah about five hours ago, came back just now and saw the screen frozen on my starfield screen saver. Computer refused to respond like usual.

I'll read through that nVidia forum thread and see if something there will help.

It's a Dell system so it doesn't have that option, but I did disable FastWrites through RivaTuner. It seems to be running stable.

I've got an EVGA 6600GT PCI-E and I've never had any troubles of any kind with it. Maybe it's remnents of your old drivers? I know it's probably not too plausible, but given your current line of work, perhaps you should save up and buy a new computer part by part. I managed to save up about 800$ on a part time job in a month or two. You won't regret it.

I'm getting an RMA for it and sending it back to Newegg for a replacement or a refund that'll go toward a 6800.

If you can't get a BFG or eVGA 6800 ( they have the highest chance for unlocking to 16 pipes, quite large performance increase, I'll walk you through it on IRC if need be ), get a 6800GT if you can find one. Otherwise, just get a 6800GS by BFG or eVGA

You'll like the 6800. It's a good card.
