Some questions/requests for anyone who has The First Decade [message #189216] |

I would like the following information/files from The First Decade:
1.Details of any visible differences between First Decade and Renegade as shipped before First Decade (although I doubt there are any)
2.Details of what it says down the bottom on the main menu (i.e. the version and build date)
3.A list of all renegade related files (or just all files) on the First Decade disk and installed on the hard drive along with their size in bytes (so I can confirm if any files are different)
4.Copies of the *.exe and *.dll files from the renegade folder (thats the only way I can make sure bhs.dll is 100% compatible with The First Decade, I have to examine the code to find the right addresses to use)
and 5.The names and values of all the registry keys under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\westwood\renegade (not the subfolders, just the keys)
Does The First Decade include a serial number for Renegade?

Look, just because louis said "the game hasnt been changed", doesnt mean the files themselves havent been. The original game came on 2 CDs. The First Decade comes on one DVD with a bunch of other games. Ergo, the game will have been changed to accommodate this. Therefore, I need to see what files have been changed and to get copies of the changed files so I can make the renegade stuff I have compatible.
The version and/or build date could easily have been bumped up too when they made changes so I need to know what it is.
The registry entries may have changed too.
louis castle never said that there would be absolutly no changes to the game, just that there would be as few changes as possible (patching to the latest patch and making the game run 100% on the latest operating system). Louis never said that there would be no changes to the copy protection (there almost certainly is, either removal of it or changes to it to run from the DVD)

And the fact that first decade game.exe IS different and that other files could be different is why I need the information mentioned above.
Can someone with The First Decade please help me out?

Read the news. Basically, when you play renalert, the dvd is recognized as allied disc and so when you play soviet side you get the allies video...wtf? EA was supposed to make all fine on one single dvd and they told they would make the games 100% compatible with winxp and you can't play multiplayer online game with tiberian dawn. You will need to add a patch done by 'the community' and not EA.
It looks like EA lied about the first decade and just compiled a cash grab. As for Renegade, I will get the tfd (for my collection) by the end of the month jonwil then I will upload the files (as I did for Renegade French version) for you so you can make renguard ok with that version.

And what do you think EA is all about? $$$
EA can do with C&C franchise(and Need For Speed) anything they want, and people will still buy it.
If they release Sole Survivor with all bugs that it had, people will still buy it.
If they release a C&C game (with bugs and balance issues of course) that would be a simulation of Kane lading on a moon and establishing a base there to peacefully(or maybe not) mine the minerals, people will buy it. etc...
well you get the point.
P.S, I am goig to create topic about this.

Except that I already HAVE all the C&C games so buying the game would be a waste of money.
But I do need this information so I can make my mods and such compatible with First Decade.

ok jon here is what i have for you so far.
i have a blank screen.
perhaps i should give more details.
first of all, it is clear they removed any cdrom requirement. So in a way, renegade now has an EA sanctioned nocd crack. The version number on the exe in properties is incremented by one minor revision (default ren with patch = 1.37.0.0 TFD ren = 1.37.0.1)
When the game gets past the videos, i get the standard menu. however, no fonts display any text, and you cannot click any of where the menu items should be. i tried resinstalling to no avail.
TFD does include a seperate serial number for renegade.
As for the other info, you might as well hold your breath. EA is no doubt going to HAVE to make a patch considering the entire main menu is non-functioning.

Ok, I now have a The First Decade renegade exe file (I realized that if it was approved for RenGuard use, I could pull it down from there and look at it)
I can confirm that all the exes I looked at (TFD, non-cracked 1.037 exe and the no-cd crack I was using) say 1.37.0.1 and not 1.37.0.0 (if anyone has an exe that says 1.37.0.0, please let me know
I have done a binary file compare of the FD exe to the no-cd I was using and the only differences are:
The timestamp in the PE header is different
The no-cd crack has some text from the safedisk unpacker uses
The no-cd crack has some text related to safedisk
Also, there seems to be a wierd one byte instruction change in the memcmp() function
In the no-cd I have, the first instruction of this function is
mov eax, [esp+arg_8]
followed by test eax, eax then jz short locret_79211C (i.e., it checks to make sure that the argument is not null before proceeding)
In the FD exe I have, the instructions come up as follows
mov edx, [esp+0Ch]
test eax, eax
jz short locret_79211C
Look at address 3920D1 with a hex editor, it is 54 in the FD exe and 44 in my exe.
I can therefore confirm that (other than the one wierd change mentioned above), there are no changes to the renegade game.exe itself that would make a difference.
The build number and version are still exactly the same, as are the memory addresses of all the functions and data items scripts.dll and bhs.dll use/talk to.
The serial number should be stored in exactly the same way it always has been, with a Serial key under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\westwood\renegade and a woldata.key file in the renegade folder. The reason that installers (i.e. RenAlert etc) would be failing is because they dont correctly find where renegade is installed. (for whatever reason)
The only thing I still require is a list of all files in the renegade folder along with their sizes, so I can confirm if anything else is different.
