Ofcourse, a browser created by a very succesfull company that is supplied with their popular (more then 90% use it) Windows is WAY safier then a browser that is worldwide only 10% used. And ofcourse don't forget that Microsoft only releases 1 patch for Windows a month.

That doesn't mean Firetrash is safer than IE. In many cases, it's not and fails to deliver on its promise of "safer browsing" due to the massive amount of morons that hawk that statement every day.

I'm pretty sure that the average virus maker would, if they create evil code that needs or uses a browser, choose IE simply because of the fact that it's Windows default browser. Yes, there are glitches and bugs in Firefox, but anyone actually wanting to exploit glitches or bugs would prefer to find these glitches in IE then in FF, simply because there are more users of IE. When FF gets more popular there will be more glitches, bugs and viruses for it. But that's logical.

I think you don't give them enough credit: Almost anyone who gets into making exploits does it to piss people off. The best way to do that is to target things that are used quite a bit. Firetrash has already passed that stage and it's proven how vulnerable it really is. If I were able to program things, and wanted to make some exploit for browsers, I'd pick Firetrash simply because of how many advertisements for it say this:

It's complete arrogance and anyone who's ever paid any attention to Secunia or any other advisory sites would know that Firetrash development is full of shit, and you're being shoveled it by the truckload.

The only thing I can agree with in "The browser you can trust" is how they left out the important part: "The browser you can trust to be just as vulnerable as Internet Explorer."

Only one is unpatched and that one is the lowest possible security rating. However, thanks for pointing those out to show how efficient Opera Software is in keeping up to date with security issues with their software suite.

Anyway just thought I'd say that it's impossible to have a 'perfect' application due to the nature of today’s high level language environment. Once a software developer adds a GUI and multiple thread accessing to a web browser, it's extremely easy with someone with the knowledge to exploit something, due to the fact the software is dependent on other issues (such as communicating with the OS or drivers).

There is nothing developers can REALLY do against this, although some may be bad programming aspects, the majority of flaws cannot actually truly be fixed - only engineered to be avoided. Thankfully hardware is so sophisticated that such flaws are barely noticeable.

So when everyone mentions bugs as if the developer is notoriously bad, they should consider the above. Especially considering the fact this software is open-source to a large online community of people who just love to engineer havoc and abuse exploits.

Why? The same thing is going to be exploited eventually in a closed source enviroment with only one developer to patch it.

At least with a open source, it's fixed within an hour or two.

Many people get to see ads that make it look superior and stuff. They are downloading it thinking it's invulnerable. Then they spread what they heard. And then they download it thinking it's goog, and ... etc.... that's how FireThing probably got populair.

Deceptive advertisements usually produce effects like that. If IE was still separate from Microsoft at this point I guarantee you'd see something like that so that Firetrash would have some competition in that area. But, as we all know, Microsoft doesn't need to use Internet Explorer advertisements that say "the browser you can trust (to have as many exploits)" because every Windows user has it already.

No shit it isn't, nothing is. Switching from IE to "Fireshit" as you call it was easy for me as the setup is similar in many ways and tab browsing, which I'm not a very big fan of isn't as annoying as it is on other browsers such as Oprah, I already tried switching to Oprah Winfrey 8.0 twice and both attempts failed miserably. The damn thing's just unattractive and doesn't fit my needs.

Bottom line is: use whatever suits you best.

I'm running Opera just to try it out right now...it's different, but I think I like it. I will say that there is one MAJOR DIFFERENCE which nets Opera some major points in my book- it displays every image on every site I've visited with it. I cannot say the same for Firefox. I'm glad Opera went ad-free for their free version; that's the change that got me thinking about it.

But hey, it never hurts to have multiple browsers. I'll never touch IE again though, except for Windows Update and the like. Too many nasty experiences with that steaming pile of shit.

I prefer Opera over Firefox for several reasons.
1. I don't want to click some random key combonation to open a new window. I like having the button.
2. I can close tabs witout opening them.
3. New pages are opened in the same window, not in different ones like Firefox generally does.
4. AFAIK you can get similar extensions with Opera as with Firefox. (I just got an adblock for Opera... WOW it's so nice to have no ads!)

But yeah, whatever floats your boat.

I used Opera for a few months a while ago. I'm back to Firefox now though, because Firefox suits MY needs more, and Opera had more apparent bugs to me than Firefox does. The most noticeable was a random crash every now and then... Don't get me wrong, they're both good browsers, but I stick with Firefox because it suits my needs more, if I need any extra functionality, there's bound to be an extension out there somewhere! I prefer the tabbed browsing in Opera slightly more than I do in Firefox, but either way they both do the same job to me in the end!
