I am sure that everyone on these forums reads reviews about games before buying them. But, based on which reviews do you buy the game? None that that I have chosen reviews from people who don't write reviews for money.
Here is example:
Far Cry
Review 1:

Review 2:
http://www.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/review/R75603.html
Now, based on which review would you buy this game? They are both reviews of the same game, but one marks the game as perfect and second one marks the game as not that good.
Here is another example:
Half Life 2
Review 1:

Review 2:
http://www.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/review/R82039.html
Now, based on which review would you buy this game?
Now, since I usually read only the low or lowest ranking reviews, I would buy these games based on the review number 2, because I think that Reviews should mostly point out the flaws the game has, not just how good it is.
I know that the lowest ranking reviews are not allways the best ones, but most of the time, they describe the game perfectly.

Reviews by people who have played the game through ALL THE WAY AT LEAST ONCE. And I'd have to be at least somewhat familiar with the reviewer.
Alternately, there are games I know I'm going to like before they even come out. A few examples I can name would be Star Wars: Empire at War (Petroglyph), Half-Life 2: Aftermath (Valve), and Starsiege:2845 (Clancore). I'd buy any of the above on opening day (provided I had the cash and either the bandwidth for online distro or the gas to go to a store) if all I knew was the title, because the developers behind each are committed to turning out a quality product.

I generally don't buy games based on what reviews -- either by people, or by magazines -- happen to say. If the game doesn't have a demo of some sort, I might not bother with it until much, much later.(Return to Castle Wolfenstein, WarCraft III(at the time, there was no demo)...) Or, in some rare cases where I can't get a demo to run, I might see if a friend has a copy, or ask someone's opinion.(Not the same as a review!)

Assuming that I was considering the two games solely based on those two reviews, I would consider the second and fourth reviews per the two games. The reason is very simple: they were created at a later date and are thus much more likely to be not-so-biased after having actually played the game for a while instead of playing it for 10 minutes and coming back "OMG THE GAME IS AWESOME!" (a la Generals, Half-Life 2, Battlefield 2).

www.gamespot.com is hwere I read mine from. Sometimes they are wrong, but I read it anyways, watch the footage and such. I don't want to buy another Terminator 3: Rise of the machines. 
Gamefaq sucks, don't read their bullshit.

Three things:
1. Try (rent not buy) Terminator: Redemption, it is the best Terminator game so far, even if it is just a Rail shooter(mostly)
2. Gamefaq has sometimes very good reviews, good guides, and does not suck
3. You did not answer my question, what types of reviews(low scoring, etc...) you read before buying a game.
I, my self, usually read several lowest scoring reviews before deciding if I want to buy the game. If I can't find many or almost none of those(Reviews for NFS: Most Wanted for example), then I assume the game is good, and buy it.
One more thing: When I see reviews with 10/10 I don't even bother reading them, because I have yet to see a game that is absolutely without bugs and some sort of annoyances

I don't read reviews.
If I see a game that I think might be interesting I go to the site of that game, read the features and look at screenshots. Possibly some forums too.
It's often then that I really like it, or not at all. I also listen to what other players say about the game, what they like and what they don't like about it, and I sometimes ask how stuff works in a game.
Based on that I either buy it or not.

Of course I do a personal research. My brother saw NFS Underground at my cousins house and he said that it as a good game, so we bought it, and it turned out to be good game.
I heard bad things about NFS Underground 2, and when I saw the game on Xbox, it was ugly. I also heard that once you finish a race in NFS U2, you have to drive through the whole city to another race, and again and again.
But the problem with console game is that there usually is no demo for the game, so it is risky. However, I bought a jam pack and it had very good demo of Killzone, a game that I have never heard of before, but I liked it, so I bought it.
When Renegade came out, I did not read reviews about it at all, I downloaded the demo immediately.
So you see, I don't always read the reviews, I only read them as last resort.
