My friend nuked my computer with a virus I had some backup, lost most of everything. I'm just curious, what should I do? Should I:
A) Nuke him back
B) Kick his ass
C) Do nothing and hope he doesn't do it again
If you have a better idea, post it.

get him drunk, slip some sleeping tablets into his drinks, drive him halfway across the country once he's unconscious and leave him asleep in a field, then drive home.
It'll take him a LONG time to hitch back, believe me, I know.

Well, if he's your friend, I'd say C, but he can't be your friend if he did that to your computer so here's what you do:
1. Learn from this and trust nobody.
2. Report him to authorities
3. Laugh at his ass getting owned by the legal system
whoa.

Go to DEFCON 1 and retaliate immediately, military installations first, if he launches a second attack, take out his major cities!
Er, yeah, legal action sounds good...

Yeah, he told me he did it as a prank...I don't want to turn him into the police, but

He's not your friend if he did that. Get him into legal action. If all you do is just walk like nothing happened, he'll attempt something else. Make him know that you're not going to take this shit from him.
Turning him into the authorities isn't even revenge, it's justice. If I killed your dog and said it was a joke, are you going to just get mad, then let me go? Granted, killing an animal is much more serious, but same idea. It's illegal, and to let him get away with it is just stupid. Make him learn his lesson. You're not doing him any favors in the long run by letting him just get away with it.
whoa.

Think of it this way ... what if because he got away with it with you, he thinks he can get away with it with someone else? If I'm not mistaken, you can file a police report without filing charges, if you don't want to see him in jail. But rest assured, if he does it to someone else (especially if it's someone he doesn't know very well), he could end up doing time.
Whether or not he's your friend -- if you're his friend, you won't let it come to that.

(Heck, if you really want to be mean you can tell his mummy).
Just don't let him on your PC again, and make better friends.

What are you amazed about? That most of us would rather not get walked upon by random idiots becuase we feel that we have to be "nice" even though they could have made us lose some potentially important information on our harddrives? What if he had a large report on his paper that he had due for school? All the work, GONE. Why? Because his "friend" decided to play a "prank" on him. Well, sorry to break it to you, but it's the real world. People just don't get away with this shit when you're adults. Granted, I'm doubting that those two are adults, but the same principle applies. It's destruction of someone's private property. I don't know about you, but I'd rather have all my files intact. I guess I'm just not all that fond of "friends" pulling "pranks" on me and making me lose all my important information on my computer.

1. He had to have let his friend on the PC, I'm not condoning what was done, but he has to take some responsibility for it.
2. I know it's the real world, and to that end, his PC should be protected.
3. I'm not saying it wasn't wrong, believe me, I KNOW it was wrong, but i'm sure it can be reconciled in a better way that reporting him to the police. (Perhaps talking to him?)
4. Trust me, I want to keep all my files intact, to that end I backup regularly and secure my data.
I guess we just have different views on how to resolve this, and I don't intend to to get dragged into an argument here. You know my opinion, so I will leave the rest of this topic to you.

1. No, he doesn't, rather or not he let his friend use his computer is irrelevant, he isn't responsible at all for his friend damaging his computer. If you let your friend use your car, and he (admitted that he) intentionally drove it into a tree just to destroy it as a prank on you, the fact that you let him use it is completely irrelevant to if you'd be even the least bit responsible.
2. Yes, protected from intruders, hackers, etc. But not from someone you let use it. Plus, if his computer was hacked and he did nothing to protect it, like no password or firewall, etc., then that too is irrelevant, it doesn't suddenly become less illegal for the hacker if he doesn't protect it. Car example again... If you leave your car unlocked, does it suddenly become alright or not illegal for someone to steal it because you didn't lock it?
3. No, it can't. He destroyed his property, what he did was illegal, it's not revenge, or taking a base ball bat to someone because they made a remark about your mother. Going to the police and/or suing him is necessary. If he doesn't, his friend will know that he can get away with more on him. He owes him however much it would cost to get it repaired, and/or the problem removed, and about a couple weeks or whatever in jail.
4. And I'm sure he didn't want his files because he didn't back them up...

A)
------------
Do not stoop down to his level and do it back. You would be no better then him.
B)
------------
Do not kick his ass, computers can be fixed, and hurting someone physically over it will not help the situation.
C)
------------
Bingo. Report him to the authorities. Have him pay to get your computer repaired, or buy you a new hard drive. Do not trust him again, as of now you should know you can no longer trust him.
If you are not going to report him to the authorities, atleast have a chat with his guardians (parents, grandparents, whatever), and explain the situation to him.
Be mature about the situation, do not do something you will regret in the future.
