This was on SA a few months back, she did go to those areas, but like cromson says the story its self was fake. She went as part of a guided tore with about 20 other people - on a bus. There was some other stuff about how and why, but I can't for the life of me remember what.
Its still a good story though.

Thats probably because Half-Life 2 is set in a post-apocalyptic time, just like Chernobyl is in a post-apocalyptic time.

Those images are amazing I never really understood the scale and nature of the disaster
I'm going to have to do something 3d on this it's quite amazing, I love the tree growing out of the floor in that house.
I wouldn't be surprised if valve used Chernobyl as part of it's reference image stock, it's perfect.
