So it goes that last night I graduated high school and was consequently partying most of the night.
Anyways, I got home and the next morning noticed that 2 computers in my basement had been stolen and the whole area ransacked. What a graduation present, eh?
They evidently got in through our basement backdoor which (unknowlingly) happened to be unlocked.
Well thankfully both computers in the basement would be considered the slowest performers in the house. One was mine and the other my sister's. Mine had a 1.7Ghz Celeron with 40gb HDD, 512mb DDR, 17 inch Hewlett flatpanel, optical mouse, keyboard. The other was around 1ghz with junk video card and 19 inch flatpanel viewsonic monitor, keyboard, mouse, used only for chatting and surfing.
So what I was wondering, is anyone here aware of any way to possibly track these computers should they be hooked up to the internet? I know their IPs and can post them once I find the paper that has them written down.
I'll also be scouting the local pawn shops over the next few days to see if I can locate them and hopefully find out who pawned them.
Thanks for any help.

But tracking the mac address would be next to impossible. Assuming that they hook up their computer directory to their ISP, the mac address will then only be spotted by the ISP. Are you going to put out an All Points Bulletin for your mac address? Good luck.
If they hook into a hub or router before going to their ISP, then you will most likely never find it.
Such is the nature of the Internet Protocol.
...you have, of course, contacted your police department?
If you're really devious, this may be considered a cyber crime, in which case the F.B.I. has a special division specifically for you!
I'm sure you'll be able to find it (the FBI CyberCrime division) on google.

There is actually an internal address that is recognized by microsft that stays the same all the time. And supposedly Micrsoft can track it down. You might want to talk to them.

Yes, we called the police over and they made up a report. We estimated the price of the computers at about $2000, so if we get that much money in insurance then we could upgrade from what we had before.

I heard there is actually some technique found to still get the mac adress of the computer trough the internet. I don't know how this works, and I doubt it will be a solution.
Oh well 2000 insurance is also good.
Size doesn't matter.

About 8-9 months ago i was having huge problems with me ISP and I had a tech over at my house like every 2 days for about 2 weeks. The tech used to log in to a website called... I can't seem to find the address, but anyways he could look up stats(speed/transfers/zip code/uptime/signal lvls and more)for my modem by searching for my IP or the mac address, I actually had the user name and password to get into that site(keyloger ), but i don't anymore.
