On my table I have four round cups. Under these cups are a number of balls. The same number of balls are under each cup. But, you don't know what this number is.

I then give you four statements. ONE of these statements is telling the truth. The others are lies.

1/4 --------- 2/3 ------------ 2/4 ----------- 4/1

Statement 1 says there will be either 1 or 4 balls under each cup. Statement 2 says there are either 2 or 3. Statement 3 says there will be either 2 or 4 balls and the last statement says there will be either 4 or 1 balls.

So, how many balls are under each cup?

Well, there "is" a definite answer to the puzzle. I'll tell you later, though

If only one answer can be right, then the answer can only be a number used once.

If 1 was the number then 2 answers would be true
If 2 was the number then 2 answers would be true
If 4 was the number then 3 answers would be true

At least that's how I see it. Confused

That's not really a puzzle. It's more like a guessing game. You gave us answers as to how many are under the cups, but we have no general numbers to go off of.

[EDIT] Nevermind, I kinda see it now. I'll try to figure it out.

That seems right.

by the way, how long did it take you to figure that out? I seen it on a program called challenge, but it took me about 10 minutes of thinking.

I figured it out almost as soon as I read it. Seeing the 1/4 and 4/1 was a huge tip off, since they are essentially the same answer. That immediately put my mind in a 'look for duplicates' mode. Took me longer to type out the answer than it did to solve it. Laughing

Five women visited the Hats Abound hat shop this afternoon. Each woman was seeking a hat for her husband, to give as either a birthday or an anniversary present. As it happens, each woman’s last name was also a color, though not the color of the hat she bought. Determine the full name of each woman, the type of hat each bought, and the color of each hat.

1. Susan didn’t buy the cowboy hat but she did buy the gray hat. Sherry bought a green hat. Ms. Gray didn’t buy a baseball cap.

2. The woman who bought the white cowboy hat didn’t have a last name of Black. Stacy didn’t buy a black hat.

3. Sheila, whose last name wasn’t Brown, didn’t buy the derby. The woman who bought the fedora had a last name of White.

4. Sharon didn’t buy the white hat. Stacy didn’t buy the beret. Ms. Black didn’t buy the baseball cap.

5. The hat that Susan bought wasn’t black. The hat that Ms. Black bought wasn’t gray.

6. The five women were Sherry, the woman who bought the fedora, the woman who bought the brown hat, the woman who bought the derby, and Ms. Green.
