I've been testing all day, but I still can't find a working mail server, they all can send or recieve, but not both! So the ports are fine, does anyone know one I haven't tested that is good?

I've tested hMailServer and Mail Enable, I've tryed a couple others too.

No. Seriously. No.

Hmm... I use Merak, but it isn't free.

You tried hMailServer, and couldn't send/receive? I could try and help you debug what's going on, but not through the forums Smile

I'm trying to get Mail Enable to work ATM, but all I've managed to do so far is send mail with it, or was that recieve?

Right, I can only send mail with Mail Enable.

No. Seriously. No.

do you have logs from either of your trials? There could be many reasons why one is or isn't working, anything from the setup not allowing relay from non-authenticated users, to your ISP locking down port 25 on the network to anything other than their own domain mail servers. Some do indeed do this to stop mail worms.

If you're using Outlook Express, and you are not able to successfully Send a message, first make sure that you have the option for "My Server Requires Authentication" checked in the account you setup. If the mail server requires this, it won't allow relay unless your client sends a user/pass with each SMTP request.

Try and telnet to your mail server (from your own computer, assuming they aren't on the same box) on port 25.. if you can't make a connection, your ISP is possibly filtering that, and you'll have to set it to a non-standard port (like 366) as your SMTP port.

It's all just trial and error.. but logs would definately help a bit in tracking it down. Also knowing exactly how you are trying to validate it, what software you're using as a client, if the server is on a remote computer, or your home computer, what your ISP is, etc.

I'm sending mail to and from the client to my other accounts to validate it (hotmail and gmail)

Outlook Express is the client

Server is on my home computer, the ISP says they don't block any ports.

so, you're sending a message from gmail, to your new mail server, but you don't get that message when you check the account through Outlook Express. (?)

Do you get them back as undelivered on your gmail account? This is also where the logs will come in handy, they should tell you point blank if a connection was received from gmail, who the SMTP was for and if it was successful.

If gmail isn't getting them back, and they simply are not getting to your mail server, then somethings whacked Smile Assuming DNS and everything is all current and your domain MX record is pointing to your IP address, it should all work.. but if those aren't correct, gmail should be getting it back anyway.

I can telnet to you on port 80, but not 25 or 110... something's blocking it, either a firewall on your end, your ISP, or the fact that nothing is listening on those ports correctly
