As of February 28, Windows users who purchased their PC will no longer be able to reinstall without calling Microsoft and answering a series of questions. The move is part of an anti-piracy effort to close 'a loophole that enabled unscrupulous resellers to use Windows XP product keys that were stolen from large OEMs.'

I swear they do this deliberately because they know you'll pay for upgrades. One can always download updates from the P2P scene. Always keep a copy of win98 handy so you can easily get updates before your install. Smile

I've heard of so many horror stories with SP2 and tons of apps not working with it that I'm afraid to install it.

In fact Windows XP as a whole gave me such absurd problems that I was forced to use Windows 2000 because it's the only NTFS Windows OS that has a tiny bit of security.

Does this Feb 28 thing apply to all versions of Windows or only versions that come on package PCs?

SP2 Didn't do a thing to me. I haven't had a single program not run because of it. You don't even really notice it. Like I said in the other post. When you install it, you need to go to the control panel and disable Windows Auto Virus Scan, and Windows Firewall. That is it. Other than that you won't tell the difference between Windows XP original, SP1, or SP2. If they had to reformat their computer when installing SP2 there's prolly a greater issue at work there than SP2...

Saves a LOT of room. I had my resolution at that for a long time. Anything bigger than that is too much though.

The good thing is that if someone does have problems with SP2 to the point where they want to revert to SP1, all they have to do is go to the add/remove programs panel and simply uninstall it like any other program.

My reason for having it that big: I have a flat panel LCD monitor that doesn't want to make my display (especially text) nice and crisp, so anything less than 1280 x 1024 @ 72MHz won't do. I didn't pay $300 for a monitor for the picture to look like shit. Smile

If you have a 2048x1536 resolution, text becomes a tiny bit hard to read.

I run at 1600x1200. It's 19' monitor, by the way.

I hate 1024x768, it's way too big. My graphics card supports up to 1920x1440.. lol. I run at 1152x864 though.

i aggre.. 1024 by 768 is just corney looking

i went to 1280 by 1024..
but moved up to 1600 by 1200 soon after..

i have a max of 2048 by 1536
which i would run if i had that size of a monitor
every thing like icons are the same size as 1600 by 1200
just more right and up space..

Edit
ive used both SP1 and SP2
not sure if i had any problems DUE to SP2..
but i recently reformated my comp and im not gettin SP2 this time around
it really only added things into internet explorer that i could tell..
and that dumb secrutiy center.. as if i dont know if my FW and AV are on....

Both of my 19" LCDs are set to 1280x1024. It's their optimum resolution, so I don't really have a choice. It gives me plenty of room to work, and since it's LCD and not CRT, there's no headaches.

I'm the bawss.

J_ball, what linux distribution were you using? I'm pretty sure Redhat supports 1280 x 1024 ...not certain though since I use 1152 x 864 @ 60mhz.

Anyway, SP2 gave me a shitload of a problems with Steam, Bit Torrent and Firefox to begin with and the first itme I got it I had to do a full format because it uber-fucked my system. (And believe me, I keep my computer clean as a whistle so the only logical thing that could have caused the uber-fucking of computer was the installation of SP2)
