Most people from 1900 to 1960 thought it was appropriate to call black people n1ggers. Just because they found it appropriate, does that mean it was? Not to me, but someone like you was defending the usage of that word back then, because everyone else did it... and obviously a group of people must be right.

You're right. We should stop calling textures skins, since a texture might be offended by our racist remarks.

If I were a texture, I'd be offended at being compared to an animal skin.

If I was refering to an animal skin, I would say animal skin.

If you can't understand what someone is refering to from the context, then you have issues that need ironing out.

Also, I want to add that skin only refers to the texture that is on a vehicle or a character. The ground does not have a skin, it has a texture.

Skin is more specific.

Skin is more specific to animal skins, not textures. Stop rationalizing, you're wrong. Smile

In other words, you can't defend your point of view well enough to show why something proper is wrong, and why improper is right. Smile

What... the... fuck are you shittin on about now, a skin is a god damn skin, if I was to call it a skin or a texture you would know what I was talking about, so what's the point in arguing a stupid bullshit point all over again. Yes if you want to get technical (which many people don't) a skin in terms of modelling is what you see on infantry and tanks, and a texture is what you see on buildings / map surfaces.

If I call you an idiot, you'd know what I was talking about.

There is no technicality, a skin is an animation modifier.

Quote:

According to Discreet's Gmax User Reference, skins are the 3D mesh itself and not the texture applied onto it. A quick search of the user reference for the word 'skin' returns 18 entries. 17 of the 18 are all referring to the 3D mesh of a model or modifiers that bend that 3D mesh. 1 of the 18 entries uses the word skin like this:

Quote:
Bitmaps are useful for creating many kinds of materials, from wood grains and wall surfaces to skin and feathers.

Quite literally referring to the look of biological skin and the way bitmaps can mimic the appearance. It would appear that in the documentation Discreet provided for the public, they do not consider a skin to be a texture. They define it as the mesh of the model itself.

Feel free to ignore me though, everyone else seems to when I bring this up.

If I was to call you an arsehole you'd also know what I was talking about. You seem to forget not everybody cares about being correct and anal all the time like yourself. I myself would just prefer to call a texture a skin, end of story, and if you don't like that, well that's your problem..

Unlike you I don't subscribe to the theory that children grow up to have different personalities based on how they took a shit while learning to use a comode.

If people don't care about being correct, that still doesn't excuse them from being wrong. Smile

Look, read, laugh at how silly you are. It's just the Internet, after all. I personally just take most everything with a bit of salt and continue with what I was doing before.

Example... I forget most things on the Internet from 5 seconds to 15 minutes. I don't harbor hate for some person I'll never meet, and I don't bother getting worked up over 99% of what I encounter online.

If you do, I seriously suggest you look into ways to find something better to do with your time... For your own sake. I can't imagine how you would act in reality if you allow little things like words on a computer monitor to make you incredibly mad and cause you to throw out "I hate you" over and over.

And your point is? How does that apply to me if I'm not upset over any of this? Perhaps if you knew what the hell you were trying to prove by using a quote from me in a way that doesn't validate anything you're saying...

The term "skin" or "to skin" when used to describe the bitmapped surface of a mesh is a metaphor.

Mr Aircraftkiller is just on a crusade to wind as many of you up as possible. Guess what? It's working.....

It may be a metaphor, but it's still incorrect.

A metaphor can't be incorrect, because it's a metaphor. If you treat a metaphor as a literal correlation, then it appears "incorrect". If I used a simile such as "I textured the mesh as if it was a skin" is that incorrect? No. It's allegorical and is obviously not intended to be interpreted literally, just like a metaphor.
