Ok I run a 56k modem on Windows me, yes I know they both suck but it's all I'll have for now and probably for a while. Anyways after 3 days of straight downloading I finally finished downloading The full version of Renalert. The problem is that the install guide says that after you run it it should start an install thing. However, when I run the file(it was saved as "418") the "Open with what program?" thing appears. So now I'm wondering how do I install this. Any help will be appreciated. And I really don't feel like re-downloading it again.

Windows 95, 98, ME is the worst operating system in the universe.
Anyone still using those pieces of garbage should die (or failing that, upgrade to something better like Windows XP)

Aircraftkiller | My best advice is getting another operating system. Windows ME has many problems and that is one of them.
|
Really? So, your advice when someone can't install RenAlert on WinME is "Get another operating system".. but when it's the same for Reborn on 98, your advice is "LETS SUE THEM!!0NE111" ?

What, the one which most computer viruses are being created for, which suffer from things like service packs that cause loads of problems for a lot of people..
windows ME is not the problem as I use it and didn't have a problem installing the game.

Has the almighty Aircraftdestroyer, even read the question. Or anyone else for that matter. Aircraftdestroyer get someone else to take over your Public Relationship job, at least EA's tech support try's to make it look like they want to help.
For some reason the file name is not "renalert933.exe" or whatever you yourself called it, but it's called "418". 418 sounds like an error code. Now you might be right about Windows "More Errors" might be the problem, but at least explain why this wouldn't be with XP. If 418 is an error code it sounds quite common.
My first idea is that 418 is an error code, that might mean something went wrong with the download. But since you have 3 days to download it again, I would at least try a few things out before going again trough al that trouble.
It took you 3 days, so something at least has been downloaded.
First let's think positive . maybe something went wrong when you gave the file the name at the start, of the download. So only the filename is wrong. We could make sure something went wrong, by just comparing the official file size (365,373,375 Bytes or 348.45MB) )with the file size of the "418" file on your HD.
If those are the same, you can be happy. In that case I would advise trying to rename the extension of the file to .exe and see what happens and try to run it. This is quite a simple solution so I'm shocked nobody else here who thinked he should "help this guy" actually thought of that.
If it's not the same size. My advise is get a Download Manager program, and try again. At least a Download Manager could solve the problem when something goes wrong again with the download.
Hope this helped ,and you can read it. I know I might make some spelling mistakes.
Size doesn't matter.

Wow like 6 replies and only one of them is actually on the friggin subject of the topic. First thank you so much Weirdo because it worked after I changed the name to .exe Anyways if anyone else bothered to read my post or at least pay attention to it, I said Quote: | Windows me, yes I know they both suck but it's all I'll have for now and probably for a while.
| don't you think if had access to getting another operating system right now I would, but I don't so thats why I said that, hoping to filter out all the people saying Windows ME sucks!!! But anyways, thanks for the help Weirdo.

Aircraftkiller | All I'm telling him is to get a better OS so that he won't have problems where Windows can't read what an executable is
|
Actually, your wrong.
When you remove the extension of an executable file your loved Windows XP can't recognize it anymore as an Executable just like all the other Windows systems. Wich was the problem in this case.
Actually if windows did recognize executables while they have a diffrent extension it would be a big security risk. Just rename a virus executable file to something like .JPG. You would your think your opening a JPG but XP would automaticly recognize it as an Executable, and run the virus program.
Even so. Come on AircraftDestroyer would you really advise someone to pay 200$ or something to upgrade to a new operating system (not to mention the possible pc upgrades you need) just so it recognizes Executables because you don't know that just renaming them also helps?
Now can we lock this topic, it has done it's job.

Okay, so he wants us to help him because he downloaded the file, renamed it to 418, and figured out that won't work?
At least, he could have made that more clear... "OOPS I FUCKED UP, RENAMED IT TO SOMETHING IT SHOULDN'T BE..."
And yes, I advise anyone to get off ME. The operating system is one of the worst Microsoft has ever put out. It constantly damages itself through overloading files, generating useless file reports that clutter the hard drive until it chokes, mega blue screens, etc...
