You could try closing all of the things except the ones that say SYSTEM or EXPLORER.EXE, but it can make your computer unstable.

Probably the only way to get a better FPS is to disable that "vsync" option if the game has it. It sometimes tears and clips the screen, but it's the only way to play with a decent FPS.

Renegade doesnt have it, but you can disable vsync altogether in ur video card settings.

First Hit the user tab up top you should see either system or your user name, hitting that tab will sort by user. then anything under your username highlight then hit end process. If you get a blue screen or the computer shuts down on you you ended a needed one.

That depends on what Video Card you have, With ATI card sit i sunder Display Properties > Settings > Advanced > 3D - then under Custom settings for OpenGL and Direct 3D set wait for vertical sync to never.
