Liberty or Equality?[ 30 votes ]
1. Liberty 26 / 87%
2. Equality 4 / 13%

Considering these two things are mutually exclusive (can't have both simultaneously)... which would you rather have?

Please vote and explain your answer.

Assuming there is only one society in the world: it depends on the perspective.

Looking at it from an individual's standpoint, liberty > equality. Equality doesn't do anything "directly" for the individual. If anything, equality directly takes away from most individuals.

But looking at it from the perspective of the society, equality > liberty. Society as a whole is more stable when people within the society have rules they must live by.

As an "individual", I'd lean more toward liberty. But as a citizen, equality is equally as important. So unless there is a middle ground, I'm not voting.

Liberty, I don't have to explain my choice, it's common-sense.

I suck cock and love it... absolutely love it. And I just got banned for being too immature to be allowed to post here.

I'd have to agree with Java, without a middle ground I can't vote.

Both are needed for a society to function properly. Too much liberty, and you have another Canada. Argue something is "offensive", argue that a certain race has the right to govern themselves -outside of Canadian Law, all in the name of liberty, and it goes to far. Too much Equality and you have a country where it is forced upon an individual, regardless of how it's done.

The middleground isn't "ideal" either. It's near impossible to define, as what one person things is perfect, will be too liberal or equal for another. I'd say go with whats sensible in this case.

You don't have to be extreme either way, just which way you'd lean if it were up to you.

Equality and liberty in what sense? If you mean equality as in "equal protection under the law," you can have equality in conjunction with liberty. However, if you mean "equality" as in "from each according to his ability, to each according to his need," liberty and equality could not coexist simultaneously, in which case I would choose liberty.

"Equality" is such an ambiguous term.

In that case, definitely liberty. I should have the freedom to work to be better in one aspect or another than the other people around me. Just because one person is poor doesn't mean I have to be poor as well, nor does it mean I should be forced to give that person free stuff.

What a shitty poll. Both aren't good if taken to the extreme, because that would lead to either some form of communism or some form of anarcho-capitalism.

Damn. Liberty everytime.

Java's a better sniper than I am. Does that mean that I should get Final so that he and I are "equal"? No?

Then you shouldn't have AIMKBOT!!!11 for real life, either.

Besides, I'd rather live in Anarcho-Capitalism than Blind-Sheep-Communism.

The rason? Human society will balance itself (or end) from a chaotic beginning. In a strictly controlled environment, it either degenerates, or eventually rebels to a chaos from which it can reform itself. I say, skip the middleman; go straight to Chaos.

Both can co-exist quite happily, for example in a Marxist Communism. Everybody is treated as equal, they have equal opputunities and resources. It is however, entirely at their liberty to choose what to do with said resources and liberties.

One problem when trying to balance liberty and equality is that if anyone feels they are not equal, they will go to extremes to give themselves a better cut. Ironically, the group that feels it was not equal winds up taking away from the group that was on top to begin with.

Liberty over equality, always. Perfect equality never works on a large scale. Better to let people look out for themselves and make their own opportunities than have the government dictate what people can and can't do in the interests of making everyone equal.

Reminds me of affirmative action....

Some cannot pick a side, that would cement them to being held accountable. They choose the middle or nothing, then they can switch to the side that best pleases others at any given time.
